HistoryVanish privacy policy
HistoryVanish is a browser extension that clears your browsing history and related browsing data according to rules you set. It was built so that your data stays on your device, and this policy explains exactly what that means.
Summary
- We do not collect, transmit, sell or share your browsing data or any other personal data.
- Everything the extension does happens locally in your browser.
- There are no accounts, no analytics, no tracking, no ads, and no third-party scripts.
Data the extension accesses on your device
To do its job, the extension uses browser permissions to access the following data locally:
| Data | Why | Stored? |
|---|---|---|
| Browsing history (URLs, page titles, visit times) | To find and delete entries that match your rules | No. It’s read only in memory while a cleanup or preview runs. |
| Open tabs and tab groups (URLs, group membership) | “Forget this site”, cleaning when you close a site’s last tab, and burn groups | Only hostnames (e.g. example.com) are stored temporarily, until the related cleanup finishes. They’re then deleted. |
| Cookies, site storage, cache, form data, download list, saved passwords (Firefox only) | Deleted when your rules say so | Never read or stored. They’re only deleted. |
Data the extension stores on your device
Stored in the browser’s local extension storage, which never leaves your device:
- Your rules, allowlist, and settings.
- An activity log with the time, trigger, rule name, and number of items removed. It never contains web addresses, hostnames, or page titles. The last 100 entries (up to 30 days) are kept.
- Your plan status (Free or Pro).
The extension doesn’t use browser sync, so this data isn’t copied to other devices. Uninstalling the extension or using “Reset HistoryVanish” in Settings deletes all of it.
If you use your browser’s own history sync (for example, Chrome Sync), history deleted by HistoryVanish is also deleted on your other synced devices. That is how the browser works; HistoryVanish sends nothing itself.
Network activity
The current version of HistoryVanish makes no network requests.
Third parties
We share no data with third parties because we collect none. The extension contains no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking code, and it doesn’t load remote code.
Children
The extension is not directed at children under 13 and collects no personal information from anyone.
Your control
- You decide what gets deleted and when. Rules can be previewed, paused, or removed at any time.
- Deleted browsing data cannot be recovered, by you or by us.
- To remove everything the extension stored, uninstall it or use Settings → Reset HistoryVanish.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes (for example, when paid Pro licensing is introduced), we’ll update the date above and describe the change in the extension’s release notes. Material changes to what data leaves your device will be announced in the extension before they take effect.
