Nightpage privacy policy
Nightpage is a browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox that applies a dark theme to the websites you choose.
What we collect
Nothing. Nightpage has no analytics, no crash reporting, no remote configuration, no ads and no account. The developer receives no data from the extension.
Where your data lives
- In your browser. Your settings (theme, brightness and the other sliders, schedule) and your list of sites with dark mode turned on or off are stored in the browser’s extension storage on your device.
- To leave sites that already have a dark design alone, Nightpage also remembers, for the sites it makes dark, whether each one was already dark. This stays in the same extension storage and is never synced.
- Browser sync (optional, off by default). If you turn on sync, your settings and site list are copied to your browser’s own sync storage, under the account you’re signed in to the browser with, so they follow you to your other browsers. The developer never receives them.
- Backups. If you export your settings, the file is saved wherever you choose.
Nightpage never writes anything to websites’ own storage or cookies.
What Nightpage does on websites
On the sites you make dark, Nightpage changes the page’s colors in your browser. It doesn’t collect or send the text, forms, passwords or anything else you see or type on those pages.
On sites that aren’t dark, none of Nightpage’s code runs.
When you copy text or print a page, Nightpage’s colors are switched off, so your copies and printouts keep the page’s original colors.
Network requests
Nightpage has no server. The only requests it makes are to re-read stylesheets that a darkened page itself loads from another domain, because the browser hides their contents from extensions. These requests:
- go only to the stylesheet addresses the page already uses;
- are sent without cookies, without a referrer and without any information about you;
- are never sent to local-network or private addresses;
- are kept in Nightpage’s memory for up to 10 minutes and never saved by Nightpage.
Like any web request, the server hosting the stylesheet can see your IP address, as it already did when the page loaded it.
The sunset-to-sunrise schedule is worked out on your device. Your location never leaves it.
Permissions
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
storage | Your settings and site list, and optional sync |
scripting | Applies the dark theme only on the sites you make dark, and right away in tabs that are already open |
alarms | Turns dark mode on and off at the times you schedule |
contextMenus | “Dark mode on this site” and “Nightpage settings” in the right-click menu |
| Access to all websites | Applies the dark theme as pages start loading (no white flash) and reads the stylesheets those pages use |
Nightpage doesn’t ask for access to your tabs, your history or your web requests.
Deleting your data
Turn sites off or remove them in Settings, under Sites. Settings → Backup → “Reset all settings” removes your settings, your site list and the record of already-dark sites. Removing the extension deletes everything it stored in your browser. Turning sync off doesn’t delete the copy already in your browser’s sync storage.
Nightpage Pro
This version of Nightpage has no payments and makes no licensing requests. If Pro goes on sale, this policy will be updated first.
Children
Nightpage is a general-purpose tool and doesn’t knowingly collect data from anyone, including children.
